The Resource Team provide specialist services which help to promote the educational achievement and well-being of children who are supported by IPaSS across the city of Hull, from birth to 25 years. The services which the Resource Team Provide include Habilitation, Curriculum Support and Moving and Handling.
Habilitation
Habilitation is provided by a Qualified Habilitation Specialist for children and young people who have a sever to profound vision impairment. It includes:
Mobility and Orientation which encourages a child to explore, move or travel safely and as independently as possible including the teaching of pre-cane and long cane skills or other mobility aids such as the Hoople.
Independent Living Skills which includes any activity which a child or young person would be expected to be able to carry out at a certain age or stage of their development and may include the use of specialist equipment.
A wide range of skills and techniques are taught from basic movement and body awareness to the teaching of complex routes, road safety and travel training.
The focus is always on the child’s specific set of needs, their age and ability at any time during the early years or whilst in education.
The outcome of Habilitation training is for the child to achieve their full potential, become as independent as possible and to prepare for adulthood.
A referral for Habilitation is made by the Qualified Teacher of vision Impairment.
Risk Assessments and Environmental Audits are completed.
In the early years, close work with parents helps them to be able to provide daily support and activities to help promote their child’s development.
Curriculum Support
Curriculum Support Officers adapt learning materials in various formats including Braille and Large Print for children and young people who have a vision impairment and Tactile formats which includes the development of bespoke items for children and young people who have a vision, hearing, physical or language impairment.
Materials are adapted following guidelines which are in line with those used by testing and examination agencies and UKAAF.
The team maintain the library, loan record system and a database of resources.
Resources provided enable CYPs to have full access to early years and national curriculum resources, helping them to achieve educational targets and meet their full potential.
Braille is produced following UEB Guidelines in Grade 1 or 2.
Print materials range from 18pt to 36pt font size.
Various resources can be produced in Braille or large print including reading schemes, novels, text books, maps, diagrams, graphs, timetables, periodic table, maths and science resources, games and labels. Tactile representations help to support learning, particularly in the early years when concept building is being developed.
Various materials offering different contrasts, textures and smells can be used.
A variety of different resources can be produced into tactile format including pictures, books, simple maps, models (of shapes and objects), toys, games, maths and science equipment, feely bags / boxes, story sacks, olfactory boxes and topic boxes.
Moving and Handling
The Senior Moving and Handling Advisor provides advice for the safe movement and personal care needs of children and young people who have a physical difficulty to school staff, including Head Teachers, with written plans including risk assessments and the associated safeguarding issues.
A program of staff training, advice and support is developed and delivered to schools regarding building modifications and equipment which support a wide range of complex physical difficulties.
The SMHA liaises closely with and provides technical advice to health and social care professionals including Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists.
They also provide In Service Training to IPaSS staff to ensure they can safely move equipment and resources as necessary in their daily roles.
