Physical Difficulties Team

The PD team provides advice to preschool, school and post 16 settings regarding the educational implications of PD. The team includes specialist teachers and a moving and handling advisor; we also receive input from IPaSS’ specialist information technology (IT) advisor, to enhance access for children and young people with physical difficulties

Advice can include-

buildings access
support/changing facilities
curriculum access and participation
implications of physical disability or illness
health and safety
emotional health and well-being relating to disability

Moving and Handling

The Senior Moving and Handling Advisor provides advice for the safe movement and personal care needs of children and young people who have a physical difficulty to school staff, including Head Teachers, with written plans including risk assessments and the associated safeguarding issues.
A program of staff training, advice and support is developed and delivered to schools regarding building modifications and equipment which support a wide range of complex physical difficulties.
The SMHA liaises closely with and provides technical advice to health and social care professionals including Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists.
They also provide In Service Training to IPaSS staff to ensure they can safely move equipment and resources as necessary in their daily roles.
